Research & Science

Explore Our World

PMMC is strongly committed to ensuring the long term vibrancy of marine ecosystems, coastal habitats and marine mammal populations. We assist researchers, support citizen scientists and encourage marine science activities in Southeast Alaska.

Research Support

PMMC facilitates and offers assistance and support to visiting researchers—our goal is to help them reach their objectives. We are a local resource with a wealth of experience and long-term knowledge.

Are you a scientist coming to the Petersburg area to conduct research? If you need local knowledge or a connection to the fishing or tourism community, we are here to help! Reach out if you need anything.

Citizen Science

We collaborate with other organizations to offer public participation in field research. Our core group of local citizen scientists are active in these programs. Contact us directly to volunteer.

Audubon

Christmas Bird Count

Volunteers take part in the nation’s longest running community bird census and contribute to over a century of data collection. Once a year participants count all birds within a designated area to determine the total number of winter birds.

Alaska Department of Fish & Game

Bat Monitoring

Each summer we help researchers study habitat relationships and relative abundance of bats. We do this by conducting acoustic monitoring surveys—essentially we eavesdrop on bats and record information as they echolocate while foraging.

Happywhale

Whale ID and Tracking

Many of our members assist with Happywhale’s emerging citizen science program, which matches whale sighting photos with scientific collections. It is part of a whale identification and tracking system providing scientists with global data.
